Magic for the 21st Century with Jeanette Andrews
Nationally hailed as “an inspiration,” Jeanette Andrews has developed an entirely new and thought-provoking take on the art of the impossible. Jeanette is one of the only female magicians working in the United States and is the only magician worldwide to have ever been named to an artist-in-residence position.
Jeanette presented her first magic show at age four and began performing professionally at age six. She has now performed for thousands across the country at private events, Fortune 500 companies, and museums as well as countless others on television. Jeanette presents sophisticated, artistic illusions meticulously crafted for today’s modern audiences that are ultimately creative, personable one-of-a-kind experiences. This April marked the sold-out debut run of her immersive performance Thresholds, commissioned by the Pleasant Home Museum, which takes the audience on a physical journey navigating numerous spaces as they explore illusions designed for each of the five senses. She comes to the REP fresh off of performances for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and being an “Escape to Create” Artist-in-Residence in Seaside, FL.
Jeanette believes that illusion is a unique and flexible medium to explore facets of perception. Her work explores the perceptual experience itself, especially as investigated through the lens of phenomenology, contrasted with science and psychology. She has lectured across the country on the nature of performance illusions, and her talks combine insights into perception along with processes for constructing performances with both interactive and visual components.
In this one-of-a-kind performance experience, Jeanette will present both interactive pieces of magic and illusions choreographed to music. Inspired by ideas about the importance of perception, this show is composed of a distinctive blend of magic with an elegant feel, and explores ideas based in Jeanette’s studies in psychology and art. Watch as an audience member’s thoughts become reality, a signed card transports across an impossible distance, a member of the audience is able to surmise Jeanette’s thoughts, and a white rose spins to life.
